Coaching Opportunities:

  • Volunteers experienced in a sport are needed in coaching positions. Sport Specific Coaches’ Certifications are available to review adaptations and training skills.
  • Head coaches currently being sought for: Gymnastics, Bowling, Alpine Skiing, Tennis, Roller Skating, Roller Hockey.
  • Volunteers wishing to help train with an experienced coach are also needed. Sport Specific Coach’s Training is also available to help develop the new coach’s skills.
  • Assistant coaches needed in: ALL SPORTS

  • Volunteers wishing to help at an athletes training in a non-coaching capacity are needed to help keep attendance, maintain athlete application/medical forms, maintain volunteer forms, help with scoring, record keeping, competition entry forms and safety supervision.
  • Site Volunteers needed in: ALL SPORTS

Administrative Positions

  • Fund Raising – may choose one or more – Check Fundraising Options
    • Volunteers to help arrange a special event like a social, golf tournament, auction, or start a new one.
    • Volunteers to help with corporate or community group solicitation.
    • Learn how to research and write a foundation grant application.
  • Bookkeeping – Assist with the record keeping of the program, either financial or athlete sports records.
  • Speakers Bureau – No need to give speeches but many of our athletes want the opportunity to speak to groups about the Special Olympics. Our Global Messengers have gone through trainings to help prepare them for public speaking. Now they would like to show off their skills. You would contact groups, companies, schools or other possible audiences to “book” them. Their speech coach will accompany them to the speaking engagement.
  • Desktop Publishing – Organize the articles written by the Management Team and prepare them in Newsletter form to be emailed to the printer.
  • Public Relations – – may choose one or more
    • Chair a small committee that promotes the activities and mission of the Special Olympics program and be a member of the County’s Management Team helping to direct the progress of the program.
    • Write article(s) on specific events, training, competition or other activity of the program for submission to the local newspapers
    • Contact community groups and/or schools and/or companies to help arrange public speaking opportunities for our Global Messenger athlete speakers.
    • Make phone calls to local newspapers asking for coverage for a specific event
    • Update the programs media list securing updated contact names, phone, fax, email, and deadlines for local newspapers and radio stations
  • Volunteer Committee – – Choose one or more
    • Help develop programs to recruit and involve new volunteers
    • Help organize training opportunities for coaches and administrative volunteers
    • Teachers, coaches and other professionals are needed to help train volunteers in specific areas
    • Help to communicate with and recognize volunteers for their efforts.
  • Family Committee – – Choose one or more
    • Chair a small committee of family members that promote the activities and mission of the Special Olympics program and be a member of the County’s Management Team
    • Inform families of information relating to invitationals or state level events.
    • Help organize socials, meetings or other activities to make family members feel welcome and involved.
    • Organize programs of interest for families and athletes like estate planning, independent or assisted living, etc.
  • Games and Competition Committee Check Events Calendar
    • Serve as an assistant Games coordinator.
    • Assist with the organization of a local meet or invitational
    • Gather information for submission of entries to invitationls and state games.
    • Speak with facility contacts to secure sites for competitions.
    • Help arrange for special events, demonstrations, Olympic Village at competition venues.
  • Athlete Mentoring
    • Work with athletes that wish to become certified coaches.
    • Work with athletes that serve on an athlete committee.
  • Facility Committee
    • Develop a contact list for possible facility resources.
    • Contact Schools, churches and private concerns in an attempt to secure training and competition facilities.
  • Sports and Athlete Training Committee
    • Visit a number of the Athlete trainings to determine any of the coaches needs, supply information about competitions and other program news, and facilitate communication between the training and the management team.
    • Call coaches list to disseminate information, check their needs and remind them of entry deadlines.
  • Athlete Outreach and Recruitment Committee
    • Make calls to School Districts and private schools to update contacts lists of administrators and teachers
    • Sports Director and Athlete Training Committee
    • Visit our Athlete trainings to determine any of the coaches needs, supply information about competitions, other program news, and facilitate communication between the coaches and the management team.
